“That’s what’s special about Christmas. It’s when you visit or reminisce about the ones you love. And reflect on how lucky you are. How they helped shape you.” Ricky Gervais
The above quote by RG made me think of my own relationship with Christmas. I still “celebrate” it. I dress the house, buy gifts, send greeting cards, but the mystical/religious aspect is gone. Mind you, I still enjoy Christmas music and make a point of listening to more than one version of “Joy to the World”, but like Gervais I do it because I associate the season with many good times. It’s the one time of the year when we allow ourselves to reconnect to parents, children friends, and family we have kept a bond—no matter how fragile—with over the years. At Christmas time I remember them and want to touch them in some way: be it a card, a get together or a visit.
