WHile I sit and wait, and ponder on the strike, and feel impotent to do anything that will get the ball rolling, I write letters to the editor, letters that are often not published. So, I thought I'd publish them here in this space all my own.

Letter submitted after various revisions to El Nuevo Día on May 14, 2010.

REFORMA UNIVERSITARIA AHORA

Parece que a medida que se afianza el conflicto huelgario, la Dra. Guadalupe demuestra que el puesto le queda grande. Parece cada vez más ajena a las preocupaciones y necesidades de los estudiantes y la comunidad universitaria que aspira a dirigir. Desde el comienzo del conflicto negoció de mala fe y con una carta escondida—el uso de la fuerza de choques—para demostrarle a sus superiores, no al presidente (quien ha ido empequeñeciéndose junto a ella) sino a la Junta de Síndicos y al gobierno, que tiene las garras necesarias para doblegarle la voluntad a los revoltoso de la UPR.

¿Por qué no se crece la Dra. Guadalupe como lo han hecho otros rectores y decanos quienes entendiendo la naturaleza pasajera de sus puestos, les han permitido a los estudiantes desarrollar un sentido de pertenencia y a expresarse sin represalias?

Mientras que la comunidad empieza a caricaturizar a la rectora riopedrense, al Presidente y a Ygrí (quien hace tiempo perdió el apellido), y a escribir una narrativa que los ridiculiza en ubicuos correos electrónicos y en Facebook, es evidente que la administración no trabaja por la Universidad. Y no lo hará NUNCA ya que responde a intereses externos.

Los universitarios debemos exigir una verdadera reforma universitaria. Una reforma que cree un grupo rector constituido en su mayoría por miembros activos de la comunidad universitaria quienes somos, después de todo, los que realmente nos ocupamos por ella y creemos en una Universidad realmente Autónoma que responda a las necesidades de la comunidad universitaria y al país. O simplemente que honre lo que enuncia en su misión: “Cultivar el amor al aprendizaje como conducente a la libertad y a estimular la búsqueda y la discusión del saber en una atmósfera de respeto y diálogo creativo.”

La encontré

Yesterday, September 11, 2009 Jane and I went to Arecibo. We were on official business, but ended up sightseeing in downtown Arecibo. First we went to the Museum of Art, used to be Museum of Art and History. Last time I was there it was a mere collection of old artifacts (bottles, kitchen appliances and utensils and bits and pieces of "old furniture"--I hesitate to call them antiques) Now, it is a ReAl Museum. It has been divided into three rooms, or are they halls?. One has the current collection, one the standing collection (Not impressive although it had a few interesting pieces like a aluminum and steel piece called "Pelegrina") and one will have photographs of Arecibo (this one was not finished) However, I found the statue of Reina Isabel II that used to be in the "placita" de la Roosevelt. Edgardo and I had been wondering about it. It has been placed in what I suppose will be "La Sala de Arecibo." Here's a Picture.  

She is looking good, and our guide Yani, assured us she was going to be restored to her original glory. I also found out that she was a gift from the Queen herself in the late XIX century. Now I still don't know how or when she lost her left hand and her nose got chipped so that she came to be known as "la reina Ñoca". Further research is required. On the other hand, I was able to appreciate the intricate work on marble; her dress has lace frills and the symbols of Castilla and Leon on her skirt.
